"A God Thought" Column # 2 for Senior Gazette
Title: It’s a God – Thing!

“It’s a God Thing!” I heard Julie’s voice say excitedly. She could barely contain her enthusiasm when explaining God’s surprising answer to an overwhelming problem. Julie suddenly became a qualified witness of God, recognizing He was the one who intervened in her situation, in His way and in His time.

Ever tried to explain God? Ask my friend about her situation or think about the wonders you personally have seen God perform. Finding God in the midst of our experiences whether we have adversity or blessing helps us appreciate that God is personal and intimately acquainted with all our ways. Psalm 139:1,2 says, “O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise, you perceive my thoughts from afar.”

Experience may help us understand God, yet we can study God’s names and find unique character qualities associated with each specific title, this helps us understand God and His ways. Recorded throughout Scripture, His names often define and display His character and attributes. Classic writers have studied the attributes of God through the years. Charles Spurgeon explains, “Emblems to set Him forth may be multiplied as the drops of the morning, but the whole multitude will fail to reflect all His brightness. Creation is too small a frame in which to hang His likeness. Human thought is too contracted, human speech too feeble, to set Him forth to the full. When all the emblems in earth and heaven have described Him to their uttermost, there will remain a someone not yet described. He is inconceivably above our conceptions, unutterably above our utterances.”

Ever tried to define God? The Practical Bible Dictionary’s definition of GOD, “in Hebrew, Jehovah, the ‘self-existent’ and eternal and covenant Lord.” God is mysterious, great, and awesome. The Bible says, “His ways are past finding out.” And yet God chooses to reveal Himself to us through creation, His works, attributes and character. Observing just one name is like looking at a postcard of the Grand Canyon. It shows just an undersized segment of a breathtaking view. When we absorb truths about God one at a time, we can better understand the reality and certainty of His character and experience the power of His presence in our daily lives.

Ever tried to get to know God? God is mysterious but He is not elusive. He wants to reveal Himself to us, in fact, He longs for us to love Him with our heart, soul, mind and strength. (Deuteronomy 6:5-9) The Bible says, “The eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are completely committed to Him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9) God loves to answer the prayer of the one who wants to know Him in a deeper way. Do you want to know God better? Seek to know God through His names. Psalm 105:3,4 says, “glory in His holy name, seek the Lord and His strength, seek His face continually.” Knowing God is a God Thing, “I pray that that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19).
